KOSPI closes at 6,808.21 on August 26, 2026 — retail sold ₩2.2tn and it rose anyway

The KOSPI closed at 6,808.21 on August 26, 2026, up 65.47 points or 0.97 percent, back above the 6,800 line. The KOSDAQ was effectively unchanged at 826.87. The day's real story is in the flows: retail investors sold a net ₩2.24tn and foreigners a net ₩116.1bn, and the index rose regardless. Institutions were the buyers, alongside buyback flows from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Foreign net selling, which had run at ₩3.95tn the previous session, fell by more than 97 percent. The won closed at 1,384.80 per dollar, 1.30 won stronger

The three lines

  • Index — KOSPI 6,808.21 (+65.47 points, +0.97%); KOSDAQ 826.87 (-0.28 points, -0.03%)
  • Flows — Retail sold ₩2.24tn and foreigners ₩116.1bn. Foreign selling fell 97% from ₩3.95tn a day earlier
  • Drivers — Samsung Electronics +1.75%, SK Hynix +0.60%. Buyback inflows and a chip rebound turned the session

Key questions

What did the KOSPI close at on August 26, 2026?
**6,808.21**, up **65.47 points** or **0.97 percent** from the previous session's 6,742.74 on August 25 — back above the **6,800** line. The KOSDAQ, Korea's smaller-cap board, closed at **826.87**, down 0.28 points or **0.03 percent**, effectively flat after rising 1.70 percent the day before. The won closed at **1,384.80 per dollar**, 1.30 won stronger. The shape of the session was weak-then-strong: the market opened soft and turned in the afternoon on large-cap strength. Volume, though, was **less than half this year's average** — this was a market waiting on NVIDIA's earnings, due after the US close a few hours later.
Retail sold over ₩2tn. How did the index rise?
**Two of the three named investor groups sold, and what absorbed them was larger than what is visible in those three buckets.** On the KOSPI, retail investors sold a net **₩2.24tn**, foreigners a net **₩116.1bn**, and institutions bought **₩764.9bn**. That does not balance. The remainder was taken by **other corporates** — a Korean market category covering general companies and funds outside the retail, institutional and foreign buckets — and by **corporate buyback flows**. Multiple Korean outlets identified **share buyback money from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix** arriving in the market as a direct driver of the move back above 6,800. A company buying its own shares does not appear in any of the three investor columns, but on the order book it works like any other bid. This page covered the structure in "What a share buyback and cancellation is" and "Samsung Electronics' ₩100tn shareholder return."
Why does the drop in foreign selling matter?
**Because the scale of foreign selling is what drove the KOSPI through the second half of August.** Foreigners sold ₩3.68tn on August 24 and ₩3.95tn on August 25. On August 26 they sold **₩116.1bn** — a decline of more than **97 percent** in one session. What sets the index is not the size of net selling itself but the price at which that supply clears; when the supply disappears, so does the burden on the buy side. On August 25 the market absorbed nearly ₩4tn of selling and gained 0.68 percent. On August 26 it gained 0.97 percent on institutional buying alone. **The same rise, produced with far less force.** Whether this is a turn in the trend or a pause before an event cannot be judged from a single session — NVIDIA's results were hours away and volume was thin.

The KOSPI closed at 6,808.21 on August 26, 2026.

Up 65.47 points, or 0.97 percent, back above the 6,800 line.

What lifted it was not more buying. It was the disappearance of selling.

1. The numbers

ItemAugust 25 closeAugust 26 closeChange
KOSPI6,742.746,808.21+65.47 (+0.97%)
KOSDAQ827.15826.87-0.28 (-0.03%)
Won per dollar1,384.80-1.30

The two boards separated. The KOSDAQ, which rose 1.70 percent the day before, went nowhere; the KOSPI added almost a full percent. This was a large-cap session.

The shape was weak in the morning, strong in the afternoon.

2. Flows — two sellers, and the index still rose

Investor groupKOSPI net
Retail-₩2.24tn
Foreigners-₩116.1bn
Institutions+₩764.9bn

These do not balance. Selling totalled ₩2.356tn against ₩764.9bn of institutional buying.

Two other buyers close the gap: other corporates, and the companies themselves.

Korean outlets reported that share buyback money from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix entered the market on this session. Corporate buying of its own shares is not counted in the retail, institutional or foreign columns — but on the order book it is indistinguishable from any other bid. Several closing reports named it as the direct cause of the move back above 6,800.

For readers outside Korea, the three-bucket breakdown (retail / institution / foreign) is published daily here and is followed closely, which is why a residual that does not fit those buckets is worth naming rather than ignoring.

3. The four trillion that vanished

DateForeign net sellingKOSPI
August 24₩3.68tn-3.12%
August 25₩3.95tn+0.68%
August 26₩116.1bn+0.97%

Read the three days together. On August 25 the market absorbed almost ₩4tn of foreign selling and gained 0.68 percent. On August 26 it gained more — 0.97 percent — on institutional buying alone, because there was almost nothing to absorb.

Foreign net selling fell by more than 97 percent in a single session.

The character of that drop is the open question. NVIDIA's earnings were a few hours away, and volume was under half this year's average. Stopping selling and standing aside look identical on a chart.

4. What moved

StockChangeClose
Samsung Electronics+1.75%₩261,500
SK Hynix+0.60%₩1,688,000
Doosan Enerbility+4.46%₩84,300
Hyundai Motor-0.83%₩417,500
Kia-2.59%₩131,400

The split is clean: semiconductors and power equipment up, autos down.

Chips carried expectations for the NVIDIA print plus the buyback flows. Doosan Enerbility and HD Hyundai Electric belong to the power-equipment complex riding data centre construction — this page covered the scale of that demand in "AI data centre power: why it is counted in gigawatts."

No single cause for the decline in autos could be established.

5. Two events land on August 27

The Korean market takes two large numbers on the same day.

  • NVIDIA's second quarter — already reported, Korean morning time: revenue $96.2 billion, third-quarter guidance $108 billion. Covered separately in "Nvidia Q2 revenue $96.2 billion." Since August 26's rebound came from chips, this print sets the opening tone.
  • The Bank of Korea's rate decision — the same morning, along with a revised economic outlook and the August edition of its dot plot. Bond-market participants put the odds of a hold at 79 percent. Covered in "Bank of Korea rate decision, August 27."

6. What could not be confirmed

  • Institutional net buying — most outlets say ₩764.9bn; at least one says above ₩2tn. This page uses the common figure.
  • Buyback inflow size — reported as a fact, never quantified.
  • Other corporates — the residual attribution is inferred, not sourced.
  • Volume claim — "under half the yearly average" comes from one outlet.
  • Autos — no single driver for the Hyundai and Kia declines was established.

Checked against 7 independent sources.
Unverified
  • Institutional net buying differs across sources. Most outlets reported ₩764.9bn while at least one reported a figure above ₩2tn. This page uses the figure common to multiple outlets
  • The size of the Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix buyback inflows was not quantified in any source. That the inflows occurred, and were a driver, was reported by multiple outlets
  • Net buying by other corporates could not be confirmed, so the statement that buybacks and other corporates absorbed the residual is inferred
  • The claim that volume was under half this year's average comes from a single outlet and was not cross-checked
  • Whether the slowdown in foreign selling is a trend change or event-driven caution cannot be determined from this session alone
