KOSPI closes at 6,995.39 on September 7, 2026 — up 4.61%, and 4.61 points short of 7,000

The KOSPI closed at 6,995.39 on September 7, 2026, up 308.18 points or 4.61 percent from the previous session's 6,687.21, and finished 4.61 points short of 7,000 — the percentage gain and the remaining distance happening to be the same number. The KOSDAQ rose 8.69 points or 1.07 percent to 822.19, a much smaller move that shows the rally was concentrated rather than broad. Samsung Electronics closed at 270,000 won, up 5.68 percent, and SK hynix at 1,783,000 won, up 8.26 percent, while the electrical and electronics sector gained 4.96 percent and food and beverage lost 1.99 percent. US markets were closed for Labor Day, so the trigger came from Friday, September 4 in New York, when the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all fell but the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 3.4 percent. Expectations around OpenAI's Astra revived the memory supercycle argument. The won closed 9.9 lower at 1,340.5 per dollar

The three lines

  • Index — KOSPI 6,995.39 (+308.18, +4.61%), KOSDAQ 822.19 (+8.69, +1.07%); 4.61 points short of 7,000
  • Stocks — Samsung Electronics 270,000 won (+5.68%), SK hynix 1,783,000 won (+8.26%); electronics +4.96%, food and beverage −1.99%
  • Cause — US markets shut for Labor Day; the fuel was Friday's SOX +3.4% and Astra-driven memory expectations

Key questions

What was the KOSPI close on September 7 2026
**6,995.39.** That is **308.18 points**, or **4.61 percent**, above the previous session's close of **6,687.21** on September 4. It left the index **4.61 points below 7,000** — the gain in percent and the remaining distance in points landing on the same number by coincidence. Alongside it: **KOSDAQ 822.19**, up 8.69 points or **1.07 percent**; **won 1,340.5 per dollar**, down 9.9; KOSPI turnover of **21.47 trillion won** on volume of about **237.9 million shares**. **The spread between 4.61 percent and 1.07 percent is the story of the session.** This was not a broad market advance; a narrow set of sectors lifted the index. For scale, the KOSPI's record close is **7,384.56**, set in May 2026, so Monday's close remains a little over 5 percent below the high.
Why did it rise so much
**Semiconductors did it, and the fuel was three days old.** First, note what was absent: **US markets were closed on September 7 for Labor Day.** There was no New York session to react to. The material came from **Friday, September 4**, when the US market split cleanly in two. The Dow fell 0.5 percent, the S&P 500 0.4 percent and the Nasdaq 0.3 percent — **while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 3.4 percent**, with Micron up 6.1 percent and SanDisk up 11.9 percent. **That divergence — indexes down, chips up — carried across the weekend into Seoul.** The second input was **OpenAI's Astra**, released September 3. Expectations that it raises AI compute demand another step revived the **memory supercycle** argument: higher demand for high-capacity parts keeps memory prices rising (「What a memory supercycle is」). Some desks additionally cited easing rate expectations, though no new rate information was released that day.
Who was buying
**Foreign investors and institutions bought; retail sold. The amounts, however, should not be repeated as reported.** Two closing reports give this: Newspim has foreigners at **+3.31 trillion won**, institutions **+3.38 trillion** and retail **−8.26 trillion**. Businesskorea has foreigners at **+503.4 billion won**, institutions **+1.67 trillion** and retail **−3.72 trillion**. **Same day, same market, figures differing by more than a factor of two.** The likely explanations are different treatment of gross versus net, different snapshot times, or different market scope, but we could not check either against exchange source data. **So only the direction is treated as established here.** Retail as the selling side is a repeating pattern: on September 4 retail sold 3.7 trillion won and the index still rose 1.64 percent. It is also worth remembering that 'institutions' in Korean market data is a single word covering seven distinct actors (「What institutional net selling means in Korea」).

Up 4.61 percent, and 4.61 points short of 7,000. The coincidence is meaningless, but the session it describes is not: a very large move that still did not clear the line.

1. The numbers

ItemSeptember 7Change vs September 4
KOSPI6,995.39+308.18 (+4.61%)
KOSDAQ822.19+8.69 (+1.07%)
Won per dollar1,340.5−9.9
KOSPI turnover21.47 trillion won
KOSPI volume~237.9 million shares

The distance between 4.61 percent and 1.07 percent explains the day. This was not the market rising; it was part of the market lifting the index.

Stock and sector moves make that part obvious.

Stock / sectorCloseChange
SK hynix1,783,000 won+8.26%
SK Square+8.07%
Samsung Electronics270,000 won+5.68%
Samsung Life312,000 won+4.87%
Hyundai Motor393,000 won+2.48%
Electrical and electronics+4.96%
Food, beverage and tobacco−1.99%

Food and beverage fell nearly 2 percent on a day the index rose 4.6.

2. The fuel was made in New York three days earlier

There was no US session to follow on Monday. American markets were closed for Labor Day on September 7.

The material came from Friday, September 4, when New York divided in two.

September 4, New YorkChange
Dow−0.5%
S&P 500−0.4%
Nasdaq−0.3%
Philadelphia Semiconductor Index+3.4%
Micron+6.1%
SanDisk+11.9%

Indexes down, chips up. That divergence sat across the weekend and arrived in Seoul on Monday.

The second input was OpenAI's Astra, released September 3. Expectations that it lifts AI compute demand another step revived the memory supercycle case — rising demand for high-capacity parts sustaining memory price increases (「What a memory supercycle is」).

Astra was in the news that week for a different reason too: OpenAI rated its cyber capability Critical under its own Preparedness Framework, and on September 2 Google, Anthropic and OpenAI all shipped cyber-specialised models behind access gates (「Three labs ship cyber AI models on September 2」). The same model read as a tailwind on the exchange and as a risk rating in security.

3. Do not repeat the flow numbers

The direction is clear — foreigners and institutions bought, retail sold. The amounts are not.

SourceForeignInstitutionalRetail
Newspim+3.31tn won+3.38tn won−8.26tn won
Businesskorea+503.4bn won+1.67tn won−3.72tn won

Same session, same market, more than double the difference. Gross versus net, snapshot timing, or market scope could each explain it, but none was checked against exchange source data. This article therefore treats only the direction as established.

Retail on the selling side is now a pattern. On September 4, retail sold 3.7 trillion won and the index rose 1.64 percent anyway. And 'institutions' is one word covering seven different actors (「What institutional net selling means in Korea」).

4. The currency tells the same story backwards

The won closed 9.9 stronger at 1,340.5 per dollar, having touched 1,334.7 intraday — its strongest level since October 2024.

Equities up and the currency stronger share a cause here: dollars arriving from record semiconductor exports, and dollars supplied by foreign equity buying (「Won closes at 1,340.5 on September 7」).

5. What remains unresolved

  • Investor flows are unreconciled. The gap between outlets is too large to average. Exchange figures are needed.
  • One data table contradicts itself. EBN lists the won at 1,476.1 against 1,340.5 everywhere else; treated as an error and not used.
  • 'Rate expectations' is interpretation. No rate information was released that day. The Fed's blackout began September 5, and the next input is August CPI on September 11 (「September FOMC dates」).
  • 7,000 was not taken. Four and a half points short — and beyond it, the May 2026 record close of 7,384.56 is still more than 5 percent away.
  • A narrow rally unwinds narrowly. On September 2, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix fell about 4 percent and the index dropped 273 points. Same structure, opposite direction.

Checked against 7 independent sources.
Unverified
  • Reported net investor flows differ by more than a factor of two between Newspim, Businesskorea and EBN. The cause appears to be differing basis, timing or market scope, but this was not checked against Korea Exchange source data.
  • EBN's data table lists the won at 1,476.1, contradicting the 1,340.5 reported everywhere else. Treated as a table error and not used.
  • The record KOSPI close of 7,384.56 in May 2026 is taken from reporting and was not verified against exchange records.
  • The claim that easing rate expectations contributed is an interpretation offered by some outlets; no new rate information was released that day, and the Fed entered its communications blackout on September 5.
  • September 4 New York index and semiconductor moves are quoted from Korean coverage and were not re-checked against index data.
