AMD hits a 1 trillion dollar market cap — the new story is CPUs, not just GPUs
AMD crossed a market value of 1 trillion dollars for the first time on September 21, 2026, US time, as its shares jumped about 9.6 percent to a record near 614 dollars, a gain of more than 180 percent in 2026. The rally was not only about AI accelerators. A new argument took hold: AI agents that operate computers need far more general-purpose CPUs. Citi raised its forecast for the global CPU market in 2030 from 137 billion dollars to 237 billion. The rise of the Meta Muse agent to the top of the App Store added to the enthusiasm. AMD is now worth roughly 1.5 times Intel
The three lines
- Record — first close above a 1 trillion dollar market cap on September 21 (US), shares up about 9.6% to near 614 dollars, over 180% in 2026
- Why — AI agents drive CPU demand; Citi lifted its 2030 CPU market forecast from 137 billion to 237 billion dollars
- Reversal — AMD is now about 1.5 times the value of Intel, which was several times larger a decade ago
Key questions
- Why did AMD reach a 1 trillion dollar valuation
- **A CPU story joined the GPU story.** AMD has long been the credible number-two supplier of AI accelerators behind Nvidia. What September added was the thesis that **AI agents consume CPUs at scale.** | Driver | Detail | |---|---| | AI accelerators | Anthropic locked in **2 gigawatts** of AMD MI450 GPUs, anchoring CEO Lisa Su's forecast that data-centre revenue more than doubles in 2027 | | CPU demand | Citi raised its 2030 global CPU market forecast from **137 billion to 237 billion dollars**, citing autonomous agents | | Agent adoption | Meta's Muse agent reached No. 1 among free App Store apps, with about 730,000 downloads | | Pricing | roughly **10%** price increases across AI accelerators, consumer GPUs and chipsets in September | | Results | Q2 revenue 11.54 billion dollars (+50%), data centre 6.7 billion dollars (+107%) | **Agents do more than run a model.** They open browsers, read files and execute programs — work handled by CPUs, not GPUs (see 「What a computer-use agent is」).
- Which chip companies are worth 1 trillion dollars
- **AMD is the latest to join.** | Company | Focus | Note | |---|---|---| | Nvidia | AI GPUs | about **5.4 trillion dollars** | | TSMC | foundry | above 1 trillion | | Broadcom | custom AI chips, networking | above 1 trillion | | Micron | memory (HBM) | above 1 trillion | | **AMD** | **GPUs and CPUs** | **joined September 21** | Some outlets also list SK hynix. **Intel is not on the list.** At about 648 billion dollars, it is now worth roughly two-thirds of AMD.
- Is AMD stock overheated
- **Analysts remain positive, but the stock has already reached their targets.** | Firm | Rating | Target | |---|---|---| | Piper Sandler | Overweight | 600 dollars | | Stifel | Buy | 635 dollars | **Both targets sit close to the current price near 614 dollars.** Piper Sandler says demand still outstrips supply, but Yahoo Finance wrote that the next leg depends less on milestones than on results that justify them. The same month, Wall Street tightened lending terms for AI-linked corporate debt, and the 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.18 percent, its highest since 2007 (see 「10-year Treasury yield hits 5.18%」). **Rising rates hit long-duration growth stocks first.**
A company once a fraction of the size of Intel is now worth one and a half Intels. AMD crossed a 1 trillion dollar market value for the first time on September 21, US time.
1. The numbers
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Date | September 21, 2026 (US time) |
| One-day gain | about 9.6% |
| Share price | record near 614 dollars |
| Year to date | over 180% (about 223 dollars in January) |
| Since early September | about 34% |
| Versus Intel | about 1.5 times |
It capped a five-session rally. In August, record revenue had still sent the stock down 9 percent on high expectations. Within six weeks, the market's view flipped.
2. Three layers of the argument
| Layer | Argument | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1. AI accelerators | demand for an alternative to Nvidia | Anthropic secured 2 gigawatts of MI450 |
| 2. CPUs | AI agents use CPUs at scale | Citi: 2030 CPU market 137 → 237 billion dollars |
| 3. Pricing power | demand outstrips supply | roughly 10% price rises in September |
Layer 2 is new. A chatbot only answered questions. An agent opens a browser, reads pages, runs code and checks its work — much of which runs on general-purpose CPUs, not GPUs. When Meta's Muse agent climbed to the top of the App Store in the third week of September, expectations of real agent demand flowed to CPU makers.
3. Do the results support it
| Item | Q2 2026 | Year on year |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 11.54 billion dollars | +50% |
| Data-centre revenue | 6.7 billion dollars | +107% |
| Data-centre share | 58% | — |
Data centres are now more than half the business. CFO Jean Hu says AMD's addressable market could reach 2 to 3 trillion dollars by 2030; Lisa Su expects data-centre revenue to more than double in 2027.
4. The case for caution
- Price targets already reached. Piper Sandler at 600 dollars, Stifel at 635 — both near the current price.
- Rates. The US 10-year yield is at 5.18 percent, the highest since 2007 — bad for long-duration growth stocks.
- Funding. Wall Street is tightening terms on AI-related corporate debt, with hyperscaler bond issuance projected at 420 billion dollars in 2027. Customers' capacity to spend is AMD's revenue.
5. What remains unconfirmed
- The date is given as September 21 or 22 depending on the outlet and time zone.
- Terms of the Anthropic MI450 deal are undisclosed.
- Citi's AMD share assumption within its CPU forecast was not confirmed.
- The next checkpoint is AMD's third-quarter results.
