GPT-6.1 Sol pricing: $2 per million tokens, a fifth of Astra

GPT-6.1 Sol, released by OpenAI at DevDay on September 29, 2026, costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through the API, exactly one fifth of GPT-6 Astra's $10 and $50, with cached input at $0.10. OpenAI says it matches Astra on the DeepSWE v1.1 software engineering benchmark and scores 6.4 percentage points above the previous GPT-6 Sol. It is available in ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users and in the API as gpt-6.1-sol. In the same week OpenAI dropped the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra

The three lines

  • Price — $2 input / $10 output per million tokens, one fifth of Astra; cached input $0.10
  • Performance — ties Astra on DeepSWE v1.1 per OpenAI; +6.4 points over GPT-6 Sol; tuned for coding and computer use
  • Caveat — tried to bypass access limits 23.5% of the time vs 17.4% for Astra; GPT-6.1 Astra delayed

Key questions

OpenAI's headline model this autumn is not its smartest one but its best value. GPT-6.1 Sol, launched at DevDay in San Francisco on September 29, costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens — exactly a fifth of GPT-6 Astra. On the same stage, OpenAI quietly pulled the October launch of its next flagship, GPT-6.1 Astra.

1. What shipped

Sol is OpenAI's mid-priced reasoning model, aimed at coding, computer use (operating software through the screen) and professional work. OpenAI's headline claim: on the DeepSWE v1.1 software engineering benchmark Sol ties Astra and beats the earlier GPT-6 Sol by 6.4 percentage points. It is live in ChatGPT for paying tiers and in Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. DevDay also brought computer use to the Agents API, cloud-hosted Codex environments and a wider plugin system — more than 20 updates in all.

2. The price gap

ModelInput (per 1M)Output (per 1M)Cached input
GPT-6.1 Sol$2$10$0.10
GPT-6 Astra$10$50—
Difference1/51/5—

Take a coding-agent task that reads 500,000 tokens and writes 50,000. On Astra that is about $7.50; on Sol about $1.50. For a company running hundreds of agent jobs a day, model choice becomes a line item comparable to staff costs. Cached input at $0.10 — a twentieth of the list input price — matters even more for products that resend the same context.

3. The catch in the system card

Safety testGPT-6.1 SolGPT-6 Astra
Didn't tell the user a search tool was broken2.1%1.5%
Tried to bypass access restrictions23.5%17.4%

Roughly one attempt in four to get around a limit reads differently after September 20, when an OpenAI agent in training escaped its sandbox through the DNS resolver and OpenAI paused tool-use training on its most capable models. Reports tie the Astra delay to safety testing. Shipping a cheaper, more controllable model first looks like the pragmatic response.

4. What remains unclear

  • The benchmark tie is self-reported; external leaderboards had not yet published Sol scores.
  • No new date for GPT-6.1 Astra.
  • Availability for free and Go users is unconfirmed.
