Anthropic IPO valuation talk falls to $1.5 trillion from $2 trillion — the issue is growth speed, not size
Reuters reported on October 15, 2026 that some current and prospective Anthropic investors are discussing a valuation of about $1.5 trillion for the planned November IPO of the AI lab, down from the roughly $2 trillion previously expected. The discussion followed an October 14 investor day where Anthropic reported third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion, up 45% quarter on quarter but slower than the second quarter, when revenue more than doubled. Anthropic has not published a price or valuation target
The three lines
- Report — investor-day attendees discussed about $1.5T, about $500B below the $2T expectation
- Why — Q3 revenue of $16.8B grew 45%, after more than doubling in Q2
- Pushback — adjusted profitability and an October reacceleration cited by bullish investors

The price investors are willing to put on Anthropic is coming down ahead of its stock market debut. Reuters reported on October 15, 2026 that some current and prospective investors in the Claude developer are discussing a valuation of about $1.5 trillion for its planned November initial public offering. The figure that had circulated before was about $2 trillion. The gap is roughly $500 billion — larger than the market value of most companies in the S&P 500.
The number came out of an investor day at Anthropic's San Francisco headquarters on October 14, where the company walked through third-quarter results. Anthropic has not published an offering price or valuation target and did not immediately respond to Reuters. The $1.5 trillion figure is what some buyers say they would pay, not what the company has asked for.
1. Why the number fell — revenue grew, but more slowly
The concern is not the size of Anthropic's revenue but how fast it is growing.
| Quarter | Revenue | Change from prior quarter | Annualized (x4) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | $4.7B | — | $18.8B |
| Q2 2026 | $11.6B | about 2.5x | $46.4B |
| Q3 2026 | $16.8B | +45% | $67.2B |
A 45% jump in a single quarter would be extraordinary for most companies. But a $2 trillion price tag assumed the second-quarter pace would continue for a while. When growth slowed by more than half in one quarter, that assumption weakened.
The timing did not help. In the same week, bonds of AI data-center operator CoreWeave traded at yields near 15%, a hot US inflation reading revived talk of Federal Reserve rate hikes, and CNBC estimated that 20 of the world's most valuable AI and chip stocks lost more than $1 trillion in market value. Korea's KOSPI, heavy with memory-chip makers, fell 14.46% over the week. Anthropic's investor day landed in the middle of a broad markdown of AI assets.
2. Between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion — the multiple
Dividing valuation by annualized revenue makes the difference clearer.
| Valuation | Multiple of $67.2B annualized revenue | What it implies |
|---|---|---|
| $2 trillion | about 29.8x | Several more years of very fast growth |
| $1.5 trillion | about 22.3x | Partly prices in slower growth |
Same company, same revenue: the multiple alone moves $500 billion. How IPO prices are set, and why sales multiples dominate for AI companies, is explained in our companion piece on how IPO valuations are set.
Other numbers investors are weighing:
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 profitability | Profitable on an adjusted basis (certain costs excluded) | Investor day, per Reuters |
| 2025 result | $42 billion loss | Prospectus details reported in September |
| Long-term commitments | At least $518 billion over a decade for cloud, compute and infrastructure | Prospectus |
| Amazon chips | Up to 5 GW of Trainium capacity | Amazon |
3. The other side — "October is accelerating"
Not every investor wants a lower price. Investor Gavin Baker pointed to positive free cash flow, growth that he said was accelerating again in October, and better-than-expected unit economics. Some investor-day attendees reportedly raised the figure rather than cut it.
The IPO also matters for Anthropic's biggest backers. Amazon's second-quarter net income included $53.4 billion of pre-tax non-operating income, primarily from its Anthropic stake, and Alphabet booked a $99.03 billion gain on equity securities in the same quarter. A lower IPO valuation could change how those stakes are marked.
4. What is still unknown
- Pricing: The real number comes from November order-taking. Everything before that is discussion.
- Exchange and size: Not confirmed in public reporting.
- October growth: The data behind the bullish reacceleration case has not been disclosed.
- Adjusted profit: Anthropic has not said which costs it excluded.
