Samsung Q3 operating profit hits 107.4 trillion won — why the KOSPI still fell 2.62%
Samsung Electronics said on October 8, 2026 that preliminary third-quarter revenue was 195 trillion won (about $146 billion) and operating profit 107.4 trillion won (about $80 billion), the first time a Korean company has earned more than 100 trillion won in a quarter and about 1.6% above the consensus of roughly 105.8 trillion won. Yet Samsung shares fell 2.42% to 262,000 won and the KOSPI fell 2.62% to 6,625.93. Three reasons: the result was already priced in and the preliminary release had no division numbers or outlook; buybacks by large companies that had propped up the index are ending; and monthly options expiry plus positioning before the October 9 Hangeul Day holiday brought combined foreign and institutional selling of about 3.3–3.7 trillion won
The three lines
- Results — revenue 195T won, operating profit 107.4T won; +782.5% year on year, +20.0% on the quarter
- Shares — Samsung 262,000 won (−2.42%), KOSPI 6,625.93 (−2.62%); foreigners sold for a 9th day
- Why — priced-in result with no outlook, ending buybacks, options expiry and pre-holiday selling

On the day a Korean company earned more than 100 trillion won in a single quarter for the first time, its shares fell 2.42%. Samsung Electronics reported preliminary third-quarter 2026 revenue of 195 trillion won and operating profit of 107.4 trillion won on October 8. It was the fourth straight record quarter, with an operating margin of about 55%. Yet the KOSPI fell 177.97 points (2.62%) to 6,625.93. The market was asking about what comes next, not how big the number was.
1. The numbers: profit up 8.8 times in a year
| Item | Q3 2026 (prelim.) | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 195T won | ~171.5T won | ~86.1T won |
| Operating profit | 107.4T won | ~89.5T won | ~12.2T won |
| Operating margin | ~55% | ~52% | ~14% |
The Q2 2026 and Q3 2025 figures are back-calculated from the reported changes (revenue +13.70% and operating profit +20.01% on the quarter; +126.59% and +782.50% on the year). A memory boom — rising prices for both high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI data centers and conventional DRAM — produced the result.
Against expectations, the verdict depends on the yardstick: about 1.6% above the latest consensus of 105.75 trillion won, but about 3.6% below estimates from ten days earlier. Forecasts were trimmed in late September as a stronger won reduced the won value of overseas sales.
2. October 8 in Seoul: flat open, afternoon slide
| Item | Oct 8 |
|---|---|
| KOSPI | 6,625.93 (−177.97, −2.62%) |
| Open | 6,808.68 (+0.07%) |
| KOSDAQ | 892.27 (−0.69%) |
| Foreigners (main board) | Net sold ~1.99–2.02T won; 9th straight session of selling |
| Institutions | Net sold ~1.30–1.67T won |
| Individuals | Net bought ~2.55–2.90T won |
| Foreigners, KOSPI 200 futures | Net sold ~1.25T won |
| Won per dollar | 1,338.3 |
| Stock | Close / change |
|---|---|
| Samsung Electronics | 262,000 won (−2.42%) |
| SK Hynix | 1,681,000 won (−2.44%) |
| SK Square | −8.06% (worst among large caps) |
| Samsung Biologics | −4.54% |
| Samsung Life | −4.27% |
| Samsung Electro-Mechanics | −3.62% |
| Hyundai Motor | −3.42% |
| KB Financial | −3.38% |
| LG Energy Solution | 401,000 won (+2.56%) |
Finance (−4.11%), transport equipment (−3.94%), pharmaceuticals (−3.69%) and IT services (−3.54%) led sector declines, so the selling went well beyond chips.
3. Three reasons: expectations, buybacks, flows
| Reason | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1. A priced-in record | Forecasts were already above 100T won. The preliminary release had no division figures or medium-term outlook, leaving no new catalyst; brokers called it a "sell-on" — selling on good news |
| 2. Buybacks ending | Buyback programs at Samsung and other large caps that had supported the rally are winding down |
| 3. Expiry and holiday | Monthly options expiry on Oct 8 brought afternoon program selling; investors also squared positions before the Oct 9 Hangeul Day holiday and an ETF rebalancing on Oct 12 |
Kiwoom Securities analyst Han Ji-young said that without division numbers, interpretations could diverge, and that investors should watch post-earnings price action, foreign flows and revisions to 2027 profit estimates rather than whether the quarter beat consensus. The backdrop didn't help: Brent crude was near $103 a barrel and the U.S. 10-year yield around 5.3%.
4. What remains unclear
- Reopening on October 12: while Seoul was closed, the Nasdaq fell 1.25% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index more than 3% on a report about OpenAI's revenue (see "OpenAI annualized revenue $50 billion"). The first session after the holiday will test whether chip selling continues.
- Division results: memory, foundry and mobile profits come with the full results later in October; how preliminary and final figures can differ is explained in "What preliminary earnings are."
- Flow figures: foreign and institutional net selling differs by 0.1–0.4 trillion won across outlets.
- Buyback effect: the contribution of ending buybacks to the decline can't be isolated.
