Anthropic Q3 revenue $16.8 billion — up 45% in three months, and markets still read it as a slowdown
Anthropic reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $16.8 billion to investors, the Financial Times said on October 14. That is about 45% more than the $11.5-11.6 billion of the second quarter. The company said it was profitable on an adjusted basis, cash-flow positive, and earning about $1.70 in revenue for each $1 spent on compute. But growth slowed from the roughly 2.4x jump between Q1 ($4.8 billion) and Q2, and the slowdown was cited among the reasons AI stocks fell the same day. The numbers are unaudited; Bloomberg says a listing could come as early as the week of November 9.
The three lines
- Revenue — Q3 $16.8B, up ~45% from $11.5-11.6B in Q2; Q1 was $4.8B
- Profitability — adjusted profit, positive cash flow, $1.70 of revenue per $1 of compute
- Reading — slower growth cited in AI sell-off; unaudited, IPO reportedly as early as week of Nov 9

Revenue grew by more than $5 billion in three months — and investors reached for their calculators instead of cheering. The Financial Times reported on October 14 that Anthropic, the maker of Claude, told investors at its San Francisco headquarters that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion. That is about 45% above the second quarter's $11.5-11.6 billion. Anthropic said it was profitable on an adjusted basis, cash-flow positive, and earning about $1.70 for every $1 spent on compute.
The mood was different from August, when Anthropic's Q2 revenue was first reported to have overtaken OpenAI's. The issue was the rate: a company that grew about 2.4x from Q1 ($4.8 billion) to Q2 grew 1.45x into Q3.
1. Anthropic's 2026 in numbers
| Quarter (2026) | Revenue | QoQ | Profitability | Disclosure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | $4.8B | — | Loss (presumed) | WSJ |
| Q2 | $11.5-11.6B | ~2.4x | Reports conflict | Investor reports |
| Q3 | $16.8B | ~1.45x | Adjusted profit, positive cash flow | FT |
Annualized, Q3 alone implies a run rate of about $67 billion. The FT separately revised OpenAI's annualized run rate down to about $50 billion after finding a calculation error, so on reported numbers Anthropic remains ahead. Neither company is public, so neither set of numbers is audited on a common basis.
2. Why 45% growth read as bad news
| View | Reading | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Bullish | $5B+ added in a quarter, and profitable | $16.8B, adjusted profit, $1.70 per compute dollar |
| Bearish | Growth is cooling fast | 2.4x → 1.45x |
| Bearish | Below some expectations | FT: slower than earlier this year and below some forecasts |
| Neutral | Definitions are unclear | Gross vs net, adjustments undisclosed |
Timing was poor. The same day, US inflation came in hot and CoreWeave's bonds traded at distressed yields ("CoreWeave bonds near 15% yield"), and investors were asking whether AI revenue can catch up with the infrastructure bill. Korea JoongAng Daily listed Anthropic's slower growth among the reasons for the KOSPI's 7.57% crash on October 15.
One number points the other way: $1.70 of revenue per $1 of compute. AI labs have been criticized for compute costs growing faster than revenue. If accurate, Anthropic earned 70% more than its compute spend in Q3 — though it is not clear whether training costs are included.
3. Where the revenue comes from
| Source | Recent signal |
|---|---|
| Enterprise API | Microsoft reportedly paying about $2B a year to use Anthropic models in Copilot |
| Claude Code | Strong enterprise adoption (SiliconANGLE) |
| Partnerships | HCLTech agentic-AI partnership announced October 12 |
| Pricing | Claude Haiku 5.5 price cut |
The same week Anthropic also announced stronger defenses against distillation attacks ("What is a distillation attack") and warned that small models could soon self-replicate on cheap devices ("Anthropic warns small AI models could self-replicate"). Ahead of a listing, it is showing both revenue and safety.
4. What remains open
- IPO filing: Bloomberg says a listing could come as early as the week of November 9; a prospectus would provide audited numbers.
- Definitions: gross vs net revenue and the meaning of "adjusted" were not disclosed.
- Conflicting reports: Q2 revenue ($11.5B vs $11.6B), growth (45% vs nearly 50%) and the profit streak differ by outlet.
