How to make a PowerPoint with ChatGPT — the new Slides feature, and why Plus users don't have it yet
On October 16, 2026 OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT Slides, which builds editable decks inside ChatGPT with real-time co-editing, comments and a presenting mode, to eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts on web and desktop. On the web, decks export to PowerPoint (.pptx). Plus and free users are not included yet and can instead ask ChatGPT to generate a .pptx file
The three lines
- Launch — October 16, rolling out to eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts
- Features — co-editing, comments, present mode; export to .pptx on the web
- Caveats — not on Plus or free yet; open exported files to check formatting

Since October 16, 2026 there are two ways to get a slide deck out of ChatGPT. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Slides, which builds a deck inside ChatGPT that several people can edit at once and present directly. The first rollout covers eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts. Plus and free users are not included yet.
This guide covers what each plan can do today and what to check when moving a deck into PowerPoint.
1. What Slides changes
ChatGPT could already draft slide content or, using its file tools, produce a downloadable .pptx. Slides differs in that the result is an editable document that lives inside ChatGPT.
| File generation (older) | ChatGPT Slides | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Downloaded .pptx | Deck inside ChatGPT |
| Editing | In PowerPoint | In ChatGPT, by chat or directly |
| Collaboration | Share the file | Real-time co-editing, comments |
| Presenting | In PowerPoint | Present mode in ChatGPT |
| Export | — | .pptx on the web |
| Plans | Plans with file tools | Pro, Business, Enterprise (eligible) |
Coverage says Slides is available to accounts with Space access, on the web and the desktop app. OpenAI's help center says it is rolling out to eligible accounts; if you don't see it, it isn't available to you yet.
2. Step by step, by plan
| Step | Slides users | Plus and free |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Brief | Purpose, audience, length in one paragraph | Same |
| 2. Generate | Ask Slides to build the deck | Ask: "Make a 10-slide .pptx from this" |
| 3. Revise | Edit slide by slide; invite colleagues | Request changes, regenerate the file |
| 4. Fact-check | Compare numbers and names with sources | Same |
| 5. Export | Export to .pptx on the web | Download the generated file |
| 6. Final check | Open in PowerPoint; check fonts and layout | Same |
Step 1 decides the outcome. "Make a deck about the AI market" yields more rework than "executive audience, 15 minutes, 10 slides, conclusion first, two tables."
Don't skip step 4. Numbers and citations in AI-generated slides can look plausible and still be wrong — the same factual errors ChatGPT makes in chat carry into decks.
3. Moving into PowerPoint
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Fonts | Missing fonts are substituted, changing line breaks |
| Tables and shapes | Positions can shift on conversion |
| Images | Resolution and rights |
| Speaker notes | Confirm they carried over |
| Corporate template | Apply separately in PowerPoint |
OpenAI's help center itself advises opening the exported file to check content and formatting before use. One Windows-focused analysis notes that on some devices lacking a required component, the desktop app works with .pptx files instead of collaborative Slides.
For work use, consider data: internal material put into a deck follows your ChatGPT account's data policy, and Business and Enterprise workspaces apply admin controls.
4. FAQ and open questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When will Plus get it? | Not announced |
| Can it export to Google Slides or Keynote? | Some outlets say so; not confirmed in OpenAI's help article |
| Can I make slides for free? | Not with Slides, but you can draft content in chat and paste it in |
