Meta free cash flow turns negative at -$2.1 billion — why a 26% sales jump sank the stock 7%
Meta reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $64.6 billion, up 26%, on October 21, but capital spending including finance leases (about $34.9 billion) exceeded operating cash flow (about $32.8 billion), leaving free cash flow near minus $2.1 billion. It also raised the floor of its 2026 capex guidance to $135 billion. The stock fell nearly 7% on October 22 and five-year credit default swap spreads hit record highs
The three lines
- Results — revenue $64.6B, up 26%, beating the $63.3B estimate
- Cash — $32.8B from operations, $34.9B into capex and leases: FCF about -$2.1B
- Reaction — shares down nearly 7%, record CDS spreads, a new nonvoting Class C share

- Why did Meta stock fall
- **It spent more on AI infrastructure than its business brought in.** | Factor | Detail | |---|---| | Cash | FCF turned negative | | Guidance | 2026 capex floor $130B → $135B | | Costs | $9.89B legal charge | | Credit | 5-year CDS spreads at record |
- Meta capex 2026

Meta had a strong quarter. The problem was that it spent more cash than it made. On October 21, 2026, Meta reported third-quarter revenue of $64.6 billion, up 26% and above the $63.3 billion analysts expected. The next day, its shares fell nearly 7%.
The reason fits in one line: free cash flow was about minus $2.1 billion, against plus $10.6 billion a year earlier. The money poured into AI data centers outran the cash the ad business generated.
1. A good quarter that kept less
| Item | Q3 2026 | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $64.6B | +26%; estimate $63.3B |
| Operating income | $13.0B | -37%; $22.9B excluding legal charge |
| Net income | $9.9B ($3.83/share) | $2.7B a year earlier (one-off tax hit) |
| Legal charge | $9.89B | Youth-safety settlement with state attorneys general |
| Q4 revenue guidance | $73B–$76B | Estimate $73.75B |
The ad business was fine; a one-off legal charge dragged operating income. Investors reacted to cash, not profit.
2. How the cash went negative
| Cash flow (Q3) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | ~$32.8B |
| (−) Purchases of property and equipment | ~$33.9B |
| (−) Finance-lease principal payments | ~$1.0B |
| = Free cash flow | ~-$2.1B |
| For reference: Q2 FCF | ~$0.8B |
| For reference: Q3 2025 FCF | ~$10.6B |
Meta defines free cash flow as operating cash minus capex and finance-lease payments. Capex including leases hit about $34.9 billion, 1.8 times the year-ago level. Our explainer "What is free cash flow" walks through the formula.
Meta also raised the floor of its 2026 capex guidance from $130 billion to $135 billion (top end $145 billion). Consensus sits near $140 billion, almost double 2025. It gave no 2027 figure.
3. Three signals the market read
| Signal | Detail | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Stock | Down nearly 7% on Oct 22 | Doubts about payback timing |
| Credit | Five-year CDS spreads at record highs | Bond market pricing the strain |
| Capital | New nonvoting Class C stock | A channel to fund AI, stock pay, deals |
| Product | Muse assistant above 10M users in US and Canada | Global launch held back by compute cost |
Mark Zuckerberg told analysts it is "going to be very important to get the math on all of this to work out," and said Muse would be monetized sooner than Meta's usual playbook.
The worry is industry-wide. Industry capex in 2026 is estimated at about $790 billion, double 2025's $404 billion. The same week, OpenAI was reported to be trimming its valuation by $150 billion for a new round.
4. What's still open
- 2027 capex: The next guidance will decide whether cash flow recovers.
- Legal exposure: Beyond the state settlement, a New Mexico court ordered $25 billion in penalties, which Meta plans to appeal.
- Monetization: There are no numbers yet on what Muse will earn, or when.
