GPT-6 free on ChatGPT — Free users get Luna, and answers now come as maps and buttons

OpenAI is switching ChatGPT's everyday chat model to GPT-6 for all of its more than 1.2 billion weekly users. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) get GPT-6 Sol from October 8, 2026, while Free and Go users get the smaller GPT-6 Luna in a staged rollout that began October 8 (U.S. time) and reached Korea on October 9. When the models launched on September 22, free users could use Luna only in the desktop app; now it is the default in regular chat. The update also adds an 'intelligent UI' that builds maps, charts, buttons and calculators into answers. The models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex are unchanged, and timing varies by account

The three lines

  • Who — paid plans get GPT-6 Sol from Oct 8; Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna in stages from Oct 8–9
  • What changes — 'intelligent UI' adds maps, charts, buttons, calculators; partial results show first
  • Not changing — Work and Codex models. If GPT-6 isn't in the menu, your account isn't updated yet

Key questions

How to use GPT-6 for free
**Nothing to sign up for: GPT-6 Luna becomes the default on Free accounts in stages.** | Item | Detail | |---|---| | Rollout | From Oct 8, 2026 (U.S.), Oct 9 (Korea), staged | | Free model | GPT-6 Luna (lightweight) | | Scope | Regular ChatGPT chat | | Not showing yet | Account not updated; OpenAI's help page says the same | | Before | Since Sept 22, Free users had Luna only in the desktop app |
GPT-6 Sol vs Luna difference
**Sol is the main paid model; Luna is smaller and much cheaper.** | Item | GPT-6 Sol | GPT-6 Luna | |---|---|---| | ChatGPT plans | Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | Free, Go | | API price per 1M tokens (in/out) | $2 / $10 | $0.10 / $0.50 | | Released | Sept 22, 2026 | Sept 22, 2026 |
What is ChatGPT intelligent UI
**Answers built from interface elements, not only text.** | Question type | Example answer format | |---|---| | Places, routes | Map | | Comparing numbers | Chart, side-by-side view | | Calculations | Calculator with editable inputs | | Choices | Tappable buttons | | Simple facts | Short text, as before |

The default model for ChatGPT's 1.2 billion-plus weekly users is moving to the GPT-6 generation at once. On October 7 (U.S. time), OpenAI published a safety report describing October versions of GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for ChatGPT. Paid users began receiving Sol on October 8; Free and Go users are getting Luna in stages, starting October 8 globally and October 9 in South Korea. When the two models first launched on September 22 (see "Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol pricing"), free users could reach Luna only through the desktop app. Now it is the default across regular chat, including mobile and web.

1. Who gets which model

PlanDefault ChatGPT modelRollout
Pro, PlusGPT-6 SolFrom Oct 8, 2026
Business, EnterpriseGPT-6 SolFrom Oct 8, 2026
Go (low-cost plan)GPT-6 LunaStaged, from Oct 8–9
FreeGPT-6 LunaStaged, from Oct 8–9
ChatGPT Work, CodexNo change—

Sol is the flagship OpenAI pitched in September as "only the performance you need, at half the price"; Luna is lighter and cheaper. API prices make the gap clear: at launch Sol cost $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, Luna $0.10 and $0.50 — one-twentieth of Sol. Luna's price is identical to Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5, released the same day (see "Claude Haiku 5.5 pricing"). Small-model prices are converging on a single point.

OpenAI's help page still says that if GPT-6 doesn't appear in the model menu, it may not be available for your account yet, so some users will keep seeing the older model for a while.

2. The 'intelligent UI': answers as interfaces

The most visible change is not the model but the shape of the answer. What OpenAI calls the "intelligent UI" builds interface elements on the spot to fit the question.

Example questionOld answerIntelligent UI answer
"Stops on a drive from Seoul to Busan"List of placesPins on a map
"Compare these two laptops"ParagraphsSide-by-side comparison
"What's my loan interest?"Formula and a numberCalculator with editable amount and rate
"Pick one of three options"Pros and consTappable buttons
Short factual questionShort textStill short text

OpenAI says plain text remains the answer when text fits best. Overseas reports say graphs are editable and calculators recompute when inputs change.

The order of answers changes too. For multi-step tasks, ChatGPT shows what it has confirmed first and appends further results as they arrive, instead of waiting for everything to finish. OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant, the fast-response setting, began answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant in its internal evaluation.

3. Why give it away: the small-model price war

CompanyEarly-October move
OpenAIGPT-6 Luna for Free and Go users
AnthropicClaude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 per million input tokens
Google40% off annual 'AI Pro' plans in Korea through Oct 31

Korea's Seoul Shinmun called it an "AI mass-market war." On safety, OpenAI says it strengthened safeguards against misuse in high-risk areas such as cyberattacks, biology and violence, improved resistance to multi-turn attempts to bypass safeguards, and made the model better at stating its own limits when it lacks the information or tools to help.

4. What remains unclear

  • Free usage caps: how many GPT-6 Luna messages Free users get, and what happens after the cap, was not found in public material.
  • Speed claim: the 44% figure is OpenAI's internal evaluation, with no outside verification.
  • Timing: rollout varies by account and region.
  • Developer tools: a public beta of a Luna-based "Decisions API," which returns typed answers such as a probability or a choice from fixed options, was reported only by one aggregator.
  • Related: the other side of the price war is in "Claude Haiku 5.5 pricing"; the same week's dispute over OpenAI's revenue is in "OpenAI annualized revenue $50 billion."
